Born on November 4 1965 and educated in Lokeren, he is the son of Etienne Verdegem, a physiotherapist, and Maria Verdegem-Verschelden, a school teacher.

In 1983, graduated with a Diploma in Modern Humanities Diploma at Lokeren High School.
From 1983 to 1986, trained with Rick Klaassen (former National Trainer of the Dutch Olympic Dressage team) in Hilden, close to Düsseldorf (Germany).
End 1986, obtained with Honours his "Horse Trainer" Diploma in Warendorf (Germany).
Until end 1987, worked with Norbert Koof (former Show-Jumping World Champion) in Willich (Germany).
In 1988, military service at Duisburg (Tervuren) in the Land Forces Riding School.
From September 1988 to June 1990, student at the blacksmith school in Anderlecht.
In June 1990, obtained his "Master Blacksmith" diploma.
Since 1990, works as an independent instructor and blacksmith.
Beginning 1993, Stal Verdegem opened its doors in Heverlee.
